An album by the name of ‘Double Bass Classics’ opening with a work not originally for the instrument is a bold move – but the playing here makes a convincing case for claiming the Arpeggione Sonata for us bassists. Tony and Charles take us through Schubert’s masterpiece with joy and introspection, doled out in appropriate measure. It’s great too, to hear this adaptation use the whole register of the instrument, taking us right down to the low extension. The Mišek and Glière are, of course, firmly in double bass territory, and the playing here is sublime and well-measured. A great album from start to finish.
